Palate repair surgery is usually done when your baby is 6 to 12 months old. The gap in the roof of the mouth is closed and the muscles and the lining of the palate are rearranged. The wound is closed with dissolvable stitches. The operation usually takes about 2 hours and is done using a general anaesthetic.
At what age can you fix a cleft palate?
Cleft palate repair: A cleft palate is commonly fixed between 9 and 14 months of age. If there is a separation in the gum line, it usually is repaired when a child is 8-10 years of age. A childs cleft/craniofacial team will determine the best time for cleft palate surgery.
Do you have to fix cleft palate?
It is important to correct the cleft early in a childs life, usually between 6 and 18 months of age, but sometimes later. Cleft palate surgery will repair the palate, with the goal of achieving understandable speech.
Is cleft surgery painful?
Some pain is normal after palate repair. Your surgeon and medical team will work together to achieve the best pain control possible, but your child may still experience discomfort. For pain, your child may be prescribed a medicine called either Oxycodone or Lortab.
